Kool Beanz Cafe - Deliciously Funky

This delightfully eclectic restaurant is one of my personal favorites. Bright and bold, both inside and out, this colorful cafe would be equally at home along the shores of the Jamaican sea. And their motto - "Eat, drink, talk loud - you're among friends!" - would fit right in for sure.

While their menu skews a bit southern, it also pulls from a variety of other ethnic influences and seasonal availabilities. To me, Kool Beanz distinguishes itself from other restaurants in town because their culinary creations just burst with flavor. You'll never have a bland meal at Kool Beanz. Just one look at their ever-changing menu reveals a veritable cornucopia of mouth-watering infusions - tomato-chili sauce, miso-lemon aioli, pineapple-habanero salsa, dark cherry-chipotle sauce, wasabi mash, ginger garlic vinaigrette and the list goes on and on. Mmmmm.....are you hungry yet?

This night, hubby and I started by sharing a chilled iceberg wedge with bacon and blue cheese dressing. It's a fairly common starter salad, however, the Kool Beanz variety is rather large and I highly recommend sharing unless you want it to become your entire meal. The bacon is crispy and fresh and the blue cheese sauce is so creamy-dreamy that you'll actually close your eyes and groan!

For main courses, I chose the surf and turf - sirloin steak and scallops in a thai peanut sauce, and hubby picked the pecan encrusted trout. My meal was absolutely scrumptious. The scallops were seared to perfection and the creamy peanuty sauce was the perfect compliment to the dish. I wasn't so sure about the peanut sauce on my steak, but it actually accented the beef without overpowering it. My dish also came with asparagus and a red pepper risotto which was very spicy and wonderfully flavorful.

The pecan encrusted trout was yummy as well. It was sweet and crunchy on the outside and yet moist and juicy on the inside. It was definitely a healthy portion, however, 2 huge fish fillets with large steak fries and creamed spinach. But I think secretly, hubby liked my dish better. He kept eyeing it - you know, like if I looked away for a second he would snatch something off my plate.

You just can't go wrong with Kool Beanz. Their chefs are completely and utterly devoted to savory concoctions that will blow your taste buds away. And their constantly-evolving menu always provides you with a choice of fresh new creations. If you do go, be sure to get there early, as they only have a handful of tables inside and they don't take reservations. But they also have a nice covered outdoor patio area complete with sun screens and ceiling fans if that's what floats your boat. Either way, you're in for a treat!
